Nishi no Seki: Sake Tasting At House Of Ho

Earlier this week, I stopped by Vietnamese & Japanese fusion restaurant, House of Ho at the bottom of Charlotte Street, London, for a fun Nishi no Seki Sake Tasting & Dinner with fellow blogger & friend, Julia Sarah Lown.

For those of you who are unfamiliar with Nishi no Seki, it is part of the Kayashima Sake Brewing Company, producing delicious sake which harmonises the five essential tastes of sweetness, acidity, spiciness, bitterness and sourness.  Based in Kunisaki, Japan, they make their sake using traditional handmade brewing techniques and are proud to deliver a sake which bonds & compliments food. ‘Nishi’ refers to western Japan, and ‘Seki’ means a Yokozuna (a grand champion), meaning that the sake is representative of the best of western Japan (it’s countless awards is a testament to this).

The evening was cheerfully hosted by Susumu Kayashima, President of the Kayashima Sake Brewing Company, Masaki Takahashi, Kayashima Business Advisor and Hiroko Nishitani, Sales; and House of Ho, showcased a huge feast of tasty food.

We started with a sweet & fruity Hoi An Sake Cocktail, which was dangerously good – I could drink them all evening!  Followed by more variations sake neat, on the rocks & warm.  The sake was really delightful, my favourite way to drink it was in the cocktail, as I love anything fruity, and warm, which I found very soothing.

Dinner was a huge House of Ho signature 6-course meal, which went on forever! (I’m not complaining – I was in foodie heaven!).  We started eating at 8pm and by 10pm we were still only half way through our main course.  We were treated with so many different dishes, I actually think we were given additional items to what was already on the menu.

Rounds of food were appearing before us and while part of me wanted to hold back, as I was trying to save space for the food at the bottom of the menu, I could not help but eat everything that I was given.  It was all so mouth-wateringly good!  My absolute favourite dish, and I will be returning to House of Ho for this shortly, was the Chilean Sea Bass (see photo below).  It was fantastic, tender and sweet, I definitely had more than my fair share of this dish!

The whole evening was so much fun, the sake went perfectly with the food served, I met new friends & left feeling so full, but so good!  I can’t wait to return to House of Ho for more of everything.  A big thank you to Emma Li at House of Ho and all of the organisers.
