Weekend Wellness With Boho Chic Yoga Retreats

I recently went on a Boho Chic Yoga Retreat run by Carolina Smilas, who also teaches at Yoga Room East in East London, as well as, on some of the AdventureYogi yoga retreats.

Boho Chic retreats are Carolina’s own retreats and they run for two nights and two days each, so short enough to fit into a weekend but long enough to relax and detach from the city. Located in Brightlingsea, Essex, the retreat is only one-hour from London by car or train so ideal for Londoners looking for a peaceful break which doesn’t require time out of the office.

Carolina’s retreat is unique because it’s part boho and part chic, the best of both worlds. Carolina’s ethos is to combine both the luxuries and romance of a rural retreat – twice daily yoga, relaxation, meditation, freedom writing, art therapy, nature therapy, outdoor spa, countryside views and nutritious food to soothe & awaken the boho heart & soul, without costing the earth.

At just £169 per person, the retreat is priced to be affordable, without compromising on comfort and quality. On top of that, there is only ever a maximum of six people on each retreat, which means that the retreat experience is very personal and tailored to each of the attendees.

Boho Chic retreats are for free spirited yogis that are connected to themselves and nature, know what’s good for them and don’t let situations or circumstances hold them back from experiencing the good things in life: that live outside of the box, flowing through life open heartedly, embracing all of its colours, adapting, moving, travelling and creating their own world without limits.  While I may not sit at the free spirited end of the yogi scale, I am certainly a fan of experiencing anything that is new and exciting; and above all, yoga-related!

The schedule for the retreat was approximately:

Friday

Evening:

  • Arrive, settle in, dinner and down time
  • Fireside pyjama yoga Nidra after dinner and just before bed

Saturday:

Morning:

  • Wake up juice & tea
  • Silent mindful walk through woodlands and along Alresford Creek
  • Yoga class
  • Breakfast
  • Free time for treatments, hot tub, reading, candlelit detox salt baths, sleeping etc

Afternoon:

  • Lunch
  • Free time/ optional workshop

Evening:

  • Evening yoga class & meditation
  • Evening meal

Sunday

Morning:

  • Wake up juice & tea
  • Mindful walk and freedom writing technique
  • Yoga class
  • Breakfast
  • Free time/ workshop/treatments/ hot tub/ walks/ trip to the seaside

Afternoon:

  • Lunch
  • Check out

From the outset, Carolina stressed that the schedule was simply a guide, there was no obligation to do everything and activity could be moved around, which was really important because there’s nothing more unrelaxing than a rigid schedule!

Carolina’s style of yoga was very ‘flow-y’, it was liberating and different to the style of yoga I usually practice, which is more steady and controlled.  I liked that her sequences were very natural and truly flowed into one another.  It’s the type of yoga which is perfect for days when you really want to lose yourself in the moment.

The food on the retreat was delicious – all fresh, organic, vegetarian and home-made.  I literally had to ask for the recipe to everything I ate!  Carolina made some fantastic dishes, inspired by all of her years travelling, including a mouth-watering peanut and coconut curry with butternut squash and the best little gluten free pancakes with blueberries.

They were among the most relaxing I’ve experienced, Carolina’s voice was incredibly soothing, I felt all of the stress in my body & mind melt away. All thoughts simply passed by me and I was able to find my inner peace.

I really enjoyed the chilled out vibe of the retreat, the free flowing yoga in the mornings and countryside setting.

Carolina was wonderful, a super-host who not only taught the yoga, but cooked the food and cleaned the rooms.  Boho Chic retreats are the perfect antidote to stressful urban life, providing the yoga practice & ideal environment in which to relax, restore & replenish on every level to bring about total wellbeing.
