How many different exercises can you fit into 50 minutes?…. How about over 15?! That’s exactly what happened when I visited GymClass in Holland Park. GymClass is one of London’s latest boutique studios, which promises a full-body, high intensity workout in under an hour.
The studio was set up at the end of 2014 by celebrity trainer & fitness industry expert, Helle Hammonds, and delivers non-stop, heart-pumping action using an array of different fitness apparatus. GymClass takes the best from of all of Helle’s training experience and latest proven sports research to bring a smart, effective and motivational workout.
Split into two, the class consists of metabolic conditioning and strength work, training the body’s different energy systems to get you into shape. H.I.I.T (high intensity interval training) is used to turn your body into a fat burning machine, sculpting the perfect physique using low impact functional movement patterns to train every single muscle group. Classes are only ever a maximum of 14 people, so you never feel squashed or invisible.
I was lucky enough to attend a GymClass Signature Class with Helle. Our warm up consisted of dynamic & walking planks, and different types of warm up stretches. We were then divided into two groups, with one half of the room doing different kettle bell exercises with lunges and the other half of the room doing a combination of pull ups and squats, before swapping over. Next, one side of the room used spinning bikes and the other side did jumping lunges, planks and running on the spot.
Finally, the last round of exercises where we were split into two groups consisted of half of the room doing stomach exercises with hand weights, and the other half doing core strength exercises with ankle weights. By this point in the class, I was pretty much exhausted and silently praying that there were only cool down stretches left to do. However…that was not the case! To end the class we did two sets of circuits, which included boxing, pull ups, tricep dips, squats with dumbbells, kettle bells, jumping onto a box and TRX chest presses! The class ended with cool down stretches.
After the class, every muscle in my body felt worked out! The class had all the social fun & motivation of working out in a small group, with the attention of having a personal trainer, and Helle was excellent at keeping everyone energised, ensuring we all gave 100%. It was definitely one of the toughest workouts I’ve ever had and certainly lived up to its strap line as the ultimate fitness concept. I’m definitely looking forward to round two!
