Life, health, happiness, yoga, style, travel, sunshine and endless possibilities…
As much as I love London, I do not love cloudy, wet & wintery days and the city gets more than its fair share of those! However, I’ve found the remedy – for fun-loving Londoners seeking their very own slice of La Dolce Vita and summer vibes without having to step onto a plane, Spiaggia, a stylish new beach-themed Italian retreat in the heart of Fulham, should be at the top of the list of places to go.
Set up by Mish Haddad, Spiaggia (Italian for beach) is a homage to the hazy, romantic days of summer in Italy. In keeping with the chilled out vibe, the retro neon signage on the walls is in Italian, the beachside décor is pretty & dainty, and the tiled floors and wooden slats on the walls look sun-drenched & comfortably weather worn. Downstairs in the basement bar a.k.a the Lower Deck, there are sun loungers (perfect for sipping beach-themed cocktails on), vintage arcade games, a foosball table and a big screen (check out the weekly movie nights at Spiaggia).
Spiaggia features a delicious Mediterranean inspired menu including piattini, tempting Italian tapas plates (such as arancini, salmon carpaccio, seared tuna and pollo pops), and piadinas – thin Italian flatbreads filled with Salami Napoli, Mozzarella and San Marzano tomatoes or Provolone cheese and roasted peppers with Borlotti bean and chilli mash. Larger dishes include a fresh and fabulous selection of authentic pastas, gourmet burgers, innovative salads and speidini (chargilled skewers from the robata grill). There is also an irresistible collection of Italian desserts such as Bella Donna, featuring Nutella, banana & Baileys or Panna cotta with limoncello jelly!
When I stopped by Spiaggia with fellow lifestyle expert, Inna from Start Up Your Happiness, we shared some piattinis and piadinas for our starters, and ordered Aubergine parmigiana bites, Smoked chicken and cheese croquettes, Fresh calamari with aioli and Bosca flatbread with truffle oil. The piattinis were perfect for sharing! The Aubergine parmigiana bites were so tasty – I could have easily eaten a main course sized version – the aubergine was soft & juicy and the cheese was so gooey, it was literally dripping off – yum! The Fresh calamari with aioli was also really scrumptious, and truly tasted like the sea – making me feel a little closer Portofino.
For our mains, Inna ordered the Tagliatelle al ragu, I ordered the Spaghetti alle vongole (clams, garlic, chilli & parsley), and we shared the Beef fillet speidinis. The Spaghetti alle vongole was fantastic – the dish is the very essence of an Italian summer’s evening, and Spiaggia’s version is simple, perfectly balanced & flavorsome – truly emphasizing that ‘less is more’. I also tried some of Inna’s Tagliatelle al ragu, which was rich & warming, and the Beef fillet speidinis were tender and succulent. Unfortunately, we were too full for dessert but I definitely want to return so I can try the chocolate dessert!
Spiaggia is uniquely stylish and welcoming; the food is honestly delightful and the drinks are fun – spend too much time here and you might just believe you really are on the Italian Riviera… benvenuto to the beach party that never ends!
