Life, health, happiness, yoga, style, travel, sunshine and endless possibilities…
With 360 degrees of adoration, it is impossible to ignore 40 Winks. Situated in East London, David Carter’s home is a historic and elegant four storey Queen Anne townhouse built in 1717. An intoxicating mix of old and new, of the seriously grand peppered with a sprinkling of shabby chic, his home exudes glamour, wit and charm. It is also London’s sexiest boutique hotel.
I recently stopped by 40 Winks for ‘Bedtime Stories’, it’s series of critically acclaimed storytelling evenings, which are a totally unique experience in London, bursting with genuine glamour, warmth and humour. The theme of the night was ‘Revenge is a dish best served cold’ and the dress code was strictly elegant nighties and beautiful pyjamas. Guests started the evening with sweet gin cocktails and canapés in the kitchen, before moving into the lounge for story time. Stories of dark deeds, betrayal and exquisite revenge were expertly recited by the absolutely talented and captivating Nell Phoenix and the seductively tantalising Ana Lines. Both storytellers had their own distinctive style and were truly enchanting – I effortlessly drifted into the fantastic and peculiar worlds of their tales. The evening ended gorgeously with music from Carmody.
David Carter is mildly bizarre in both his manners and his dress, and was described as an ‘elegant sliver of fin-de-siecle aestheticism’ by the Economist’s Intelligent Life a few months ago. He set the scene perfectly and there’s certainly a reason why ‘Bedtime Stories’ has been included in The Sunday Times Travel Magazine hot list of the 14 Most Amazing Things to do in the World. ‘Bedtime Stories’ is perfect for those who need a touch escapism with a large serving of eccentricity!
