Bend it like Barbie!

FRAME, the dance, fitness and holistic studio right smack-bang in the middle of Shoreditch, London, runs a series of excellent two hour weekend workshops covering various forms of yoga, Pilates and dance every month.  I recently attended the Bending over Backwards yoga workshop with the wonderful and bendy Melanie Brittner.  The workshop was absolutely fantastic!  Bending over backwards shakes us out of our comfort zone – most of our daily movements in life send us forward, so it’s no surprise that when we take ourselves upside down and backwards, it can be a whole new experience.  Backbends open the entire front body (not just the back), and quite often tightness in the shoulders and the legs is what prevents us from taking the backbend deeper or at all.

The Bending over Backwards yoga workshop focuses on opening the front body, shoulders, legs, and the heart, giving the class a huge surge of energy, and brightening our moods. Backbends have an amazing uplifting effect on us mentally, physically and emotionally.  They are great for the digestive system, the health of the spine, and open up the body to deep diaphragmatic breathing.  The workshop flowed through a slow build of backbends to work safely towards more dynamic backbends, by finding length in our lower backs and an opening through the chest, upper back and shoulder. We utilised numerous standing poses to strengthen our core and stabilize our pelvis to help create a deeper opening.  We also worked through various asanas including: Cobra, Camel, Upward Bow, Handstands and Wild Thing, which are all excellent for invigorating, realigning and increasing mobility in the spine.  I left the class feeling very relaxed, the backbending released a lot tension and I really enjoyed developing a deeper understanding of the poses.
