Life, health, happiness, yoga, style, travel, sunshine and endless possibilities…
Flexibility is a vital part of our overall fitness, which is often forgotten about, it can help prevent injury and improve athletic performance. Sport can have an unbalancing effect on the body, but regular stretching can even it out and prevent chronic over-use injuries.
Last Saturday I went over to the Frame Shoreditch dance studio to take part in their midday ‘Dynamic Stretch’ class. Against a backdrop of 1980’s pop music, and led by a really friendly instructor, the class moved through a flowing sequence of stretches to warm and limber the body before moving to more static isolated stretches to get deeper into the stretch.
Dynamic stretching uses momentum, speed of movement, and active muscular effort to bring about a stretch, which effectively muscle tightness. All the major and minor muscle groups were targeted and the class was suitable for all levels of flexibility.
The class was different to anything I’ve done before and is perfect for people who want to stretch out their muscles but aren’t into yoga!
One of the great things about ‘Dynamic Stretch’ was how I felt afterwards. Five minutes of stretching after exercise can feel amazing, so imagine what an hour of stretching feels like! I left the class feeling very relaxed and supple, and am already planning my return to attend the ‘Bend it like Barbie’ class!
